What Is Catfishing? #AAH
Some of you might recognize catfishing as “romance scams” as well. In simple terms, this is when a person pretends to be somebody else, quite often of opposite gender, to emotionally manipulate for financial advantage or blackmail later.
Its technical description is- “Deceptive activity where a person creates a sock puppet presence or fake identity on a social networking service, usually targeting a specific victim for abuse or fraud.
Catfishing is often employed for romance scams on dating websites.”
Few ways to stay safe from this scam are:
– Don’t share personal, intimate, sensitive information online
– Watch out for online conversations turning romantic quickly
– Beware anyone who asks for money
– Be alert about someone who never speaks to you on phone or video calls
– Track your persona online to see what/ where your name/ pictures show up
