Couple of months ago we had advised against an “influencer campaign” where these so called social media influencers were promoting a site that claimed to be able to remove objectionable content “from all places on the internet!” What a scam!
Let us explain to you. This organization ran a campaign with Meta earlier where jointly they committed to removing such content from these particular social platforms & prevent its upload again. Great! We appreciate that intention! That process involved generating a digital fingerprint – called a hash – of the image(s)/video(s) on your device. A hash will be sent from your device, but not the image/video itself.
However, the marketing campaign they ran recently was totally different, they asked for the morphed/ n*de images to be uploaded on the promise that they will remove it “from all places on the internet” not any platforms, but from entire internet!
The red flags –
- Nobody can remove anything from all places on the internet, that’s a scam! What about dark web? What about cloud, circulation on WhatsApp, reuploading, there is always a possibility of the content being present somewhere on the internet forever. Therefore it’s a misleading claim
- This particular organization doesn’t have any formal agreement with law enforcement in India, so where is the data being kept, is it safe, what is the privacy policy?
- Are the influencers so ignorant? Don’t they fact check what they are promoting? Are they aware it’s a false claim? They should definitely be penalised for this stupidity
When a journalist reached out to the said organisation, they accepted that they cant remove content from all places on the internet, and of course, that’s exactly what we were saying!
So now, why the false claim, why the misleading marketing, who should be held responsible? There are so many unanswered questions. We have of course filed a complaint against all those who were blindly promoting this claim for money.
As for our dear viewers please do not share any of your sensitive content/ complaint with anyone else except the Indian police. We totally understand that if your intimate data is leaked, it’s a very traumatic experience, sorry if its happened with you. Ask for support, reach out to someone you trust, you will be surprised with reactions of people who love you, they will always protect you.
But, remember at all points- NOBODY CANT REMOVE CONTENT FROM ALL PLACES ON THE INTERNET, OUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS REMAIN FOREVER. ONLY TRUST THE INDIAN POLICE WITH ANY EVIDENCE/COMPLAINTS.
