Right way to say RIP on social media  #AAH

Akancha Srivastava- Founder of ‘Akancha Against Harassment’ addresses the sensitive & traumatic topic of right way to say RIP on social media.

In recent times, a lot of our beloved Bollywood celebrities have passed away and there has been an outpouring of emotions online to bid them goodbye. But what really is the right way to say RIP on social media?

In several untimely deaths like Sushant Singh Rajput, unfortunately pictures of the deceased’s body & even final rites were widely circulated on social media. That is against the Supreme Court ruling of March 2018 where it defined right to die with dignity as a fundamental right!

To push mikes into faces of deceased’s family, is ‘cruelty by interference’ which Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed by India ,defines as unlawful. Press Council of India in September 2019 adopted international guidelines of reporting suicides that clearly state that there will no repetitive, prominent reporting of the incident. It also states that the exact manner of suicide or the suicide note.

Such sacred, personal moments have to be respected not just cos our law says so, also because its basic humane behaviour.

All these guidelines were flouted by media as well as everybody else on social media. Not only is that flouting of principles, it is also ethically, morally wrong! This is no way to say RIP on social media.

So many conspiracy theories float around immediately after any social media personalities’ death and everyone starts speculating about their personal life, reasons for death, blaming other people- we need to stop and think what it does to families of the person who has gone.

Looking at such pictures might also trigger anxiety & nervousness in people who might be suffering from any mental ailments. This can lead to severe consequences.

Remember those who are gone with love & gratitude. Don’t flout guidelines and remember- Right to die with dignity is fundamental right as defined by our constitution!
