DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA! #AAH
Recently I read this unfortunate news where a 14 year old girl ended her life as a paedophile gang had groomed her into sharing certain kind of inappropriate pictures & then blackmailed & threatened her. Unable to take this pressure, fear of parents, shame drove her to take this extreme step and hung herself. This is not an isolated incident either. Devastating!
DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA!
Children below 16 years or so should not be wasting time on these apps which are just vanity driven and put insane peer pressure on trends of them. Parents are too busy to monitor but paedophiles have the time, patience and criminal bent of mind for it. They know how to manipulate your child’s need for validation. Predators use grooming in a manner that the child begins to trust them much more that parents themselves.
Putting provocative pictures are an absolute no no!
Please question if your child really needs a smartphone if at all! Monitor their internet activity, use your own number for any of these “study groups”. Keep tech devices in full view of family at home. Install apps that share their real time activities, discuss with them and let them know why. Talk to the about perils of sexting. It’s cos we have made the subject so taboo that the child doesn’t even know real dangers.
Above all, please remember that good, intelligent, curious kids make mistakes too. There should be enough trust between kids and you that should anything go wrong they can confess to you. Mistakes can be corrected. Life is precious.
