Crowd Funding Scams! #AAH

Crowdfunding is the funding of a project or initiative by a group of people via the internet.

It can also be for personal reasons, like someone can’t complete their studies, a child needs expensive treatment, or when there is a natural disaster like earthquakes/ floods or tragedies like there was Pulwama attack. Then all of us come together to immediately contribute.

Crowdfunding obviously works on emotional appeal when somebody asks for our empathy, appeals for us to be compassionate, considerate.

However in recent times there have been disappointments or even frauds committed in the name of crowd funding. When such incidents happen, people feel very let down as they believed their hard earned money was going to a good cause but it didn’t. Then, they lose faith in other such genuine causes as well.

To avoid such experiences, its important to check for compliances like if it’s an NGO – is it registered with the Government of India in relevant sections, CRN certificates, their bank accounts in India, if you are donating from outside India do they have FCRA certificate, are they declaring the progress of the fund completion, what does Google say about the work of the organisation.

If it’s for a personal cause, who’s the beneficiary, what is the requirement, who is monitoring, do you trust the crowd funding platform etc.

Please do watch this video. It will answer a lot of your related queries. DO remember that not all crowd funding campaigns are scams just like not all of them are true. Use your discernment.
